Virginia Aquarium Bids Farewell to Harbor Seal Norton

With a heavy heart and lots of love, we join our friends at the Virginia Aquarium in mourning the loss of their beloved Atlantic harbor seal Norton.

Norton was born on May 31, 1987 at Mystic Aquarium in Mystic, Connecticut. He came to the Virginia Aquarium on August 30, 1996. He passed at the ripe old age of 29. He is survived by his seal family; Peter, who recently turned 30, and Piper, age 25, Hector, and baby Rudder and of course the staff and guests of the Virginia Aquarium.

The aquarium says that he would eat anything from jellyfish to smelt, and he loved to tumble backward off the rocks and into the water of his exhibit.

Executive Director of the Virginia Aquarium Lynn Clements says, “While we are heartbroken at the loss of Norton, his age and health have been true testaments to the incredible care that our staff provides for these animals. From weekly checkups to a diet of restaurant-quality seafood, we work diligently to provide the highest quality of life for them.”

Our hearts are with the aquarium and staff during this difficult time, and every time we visit your brothers in Virginia Beach we’ll think of you!
