The special weekend for Waterside District is finally here! Starting May 11, the doors will open for good with festivities, featuring live music and activities, going through the 14th. The venue held a soft opening last week, but decided to close for three days this week to “regroup” and “make tweaks” before the grand opening.
Bands and artists set to perform include Weezer and New Politics on May 11 and Chase Rice on May 13. All concerts are free to the public and will be held at Waterside District’s age-restricted outdoor venue. You must be over 21.
The Waterside District says the public can start forming a line around 9 a.m. Thursday. Only about 2,000 people will be admitted to the concert venue, so it is advised to show up early.
There will also be family-friendly events like face painting, magicians, a bounce house, Tides fast pitch, a mascot party and more.
Ferry rides will be free all day Saturday and Sunday, courtesy of Elizabeth River Crossings. The ferry, which connects the downtowns of Norfolk and Portsmouth, will run until midnight Thursday through Saturday. It will operate every 30 minutes until 5:15 p.m., then every 15 minutes through midnight.
The Tide light rail will run every 15 minutes in the evening on Thursday, until midnight, then will revert to regular hours and service Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The closest stops to Waterside are MacArthur Square or Civic Plaza.
Parking garages near Waterside will collect a $5 on-entry fee through Saturday. Cash or credit will be accepted at Waterside and Main Street garages. Fountain Park, Town Point, West Plume and Boush Street garages will be cash only.
