If you often buy wine from your local grocery store, you’re in good company. According to research, 35 million of your closest friends across America have purchased wine from a grocery store in the past 30 days. Wine sales are turning into big business for grocers and this is evident if you’ve recently perused the ever-expanding wine department in these stores.
While this may be a convenient way to buy wine as you’re picking up provisions for your next meal, you’re really missing out if you haven’t explored some of the locally owned wine shops in Hampton Roads. Over the summer, I will be writing about many of the wonderful wine shops throughout our region to help you explore new territory with your palate.
A common thread shared between the owners of these shops is their passion and enthusiasm for the fruit of the vine. These wine aficionados want to share their deep rooted love with you to help you make a more informed and enjoyable wine purchase.
We start this week with Yiannis Wine Shop in Virginia Beach. The shop is nestled in the middle of the Renaissance Place Shopping Center off of Great Neck Road.
The wine shop is owned and operated by Yiannis Choutris, who emigrated to the United States from Cyprus in 1997. You can say that wine has always been in Yiannis blood. He says, “Wine is simply a way of life. It was always part of our daily meal. To me, wine is what makes the food taste better and food makes the wine taste better. Wine is an accompaniment to life.” Some of his fondest childhood memories come from the long afternoons he spent with his grandfather stomping grapes after harvest. Fast forward a few decades and Yiannis Wine Shop was born in the fall of 2011. Yiannis is now sharing his love of wine and knowledge with his customers. His staff is friendly and always willing to make a recommendation to pair with your next meal.
Yiannis Wine Shop has more than 500 wines (at every price point) to choose from with a strong focus on wines from California. A temperature controlled high-end room for all wines over $35 ensures proper storage for those special selections. Yiannis prides himself on offering great prices and unique selections that are often exclusive to restaurants. He says many of his offerings can not be found among the sea of labels at the grocery story.
Yiannis offers complimentary tastings every Friday and Saturday night from 5:30pm – 8:00pm highlighting different regions and winemakers each week. In addition to the weekly tastings, Yiannis offers a wine club, delivery service and special events throughout the year. To stay up to date on all of these events, follow the shop on Facebook.
