Your Hampton Roads Thanksgiving Weekend

Thanksgiving is Thursday and with it comes the official start to the holiday season. There are a ton of great holiday activities happening this week including tree lightings, Santa visits and crafts galore. After spending Friday at the malls check out these fun events and work off some of that turkey and stuffing!

Starting Wednesday, November 23 through the weekend:


Friday – Sunday |  Ole’ Country Christmas – Opening Weekend | Greenbrier Farms
Ole’ Country Christmas returns with fresh, homemade wreaths and hundreds of acres of cut your own Christmas Trees. Also Santa will also return to the farm this year for photos with children, and even pets.


Wednesday – Sunday | Disney on Ice Presents Follow your Heart | Hampton Coliseum
Make unforgettable memories with Mickey, Minnie and all your Disney friends when Disney On Ice presents Follow Your Heart skates into Hampton Roads!!
Time: Varies by Date

Cost: $13 – $65


Starting Thursday – Dec. 31 | Dominion Garden of Lights | Norfolk Botanical Garden
During this event, the Garden is transformed into a winter wonderland where you will enjoy a 2-mile drive through a million sparkling lights bringing the four seasons to life.
$20-$25 per car


Friday – Sunday | Opening Weekend: Winter Wonderland | Portsmouth Cultural & Arts Center
Celebrate the season with Winter Wonderland a holiday classic for generations of Hampton Roads visitors and residents. Animated displays from the Coleman Collection feature Victorian skaters and carolers, enchanted forest of bears, deer and other fauna along with Santa’s workshop, candy store and bakery.
Admission to Winter Wonderland is $3.00/person or free for museum members.

Virginia Beach

Friday – Sunday | 35th Annual Virginia Beach Christmas Market | Virginia Beach Convention Center
Featured artisans will offer fine arts, pottery, jewelry, stained glass, wood, toys, photography, fiber arts, thousands of Christmas collectibles and much, much more.
$8 Adults; $2 Children 6-12; Children ages 5 and younger Free – One admission covers all three days.

Wednesday – Sunday (except Thursday) | Ian Bagg | Virginia Beach Funny Bone
The “Last Comic Standing” comedian has been featured on “Late Night with Conan O’Brien,” “The Late Late show with Craig Ferguson” and “Tonight Show with Jay Leno.”

Friday – Sunday | Planes, Trains and Santa | Military Aviation Museum
The MAM, in association with the Tidewater Division of the National Model Railroad Association, is pleased to announce its 7th-annual model train show!
Regular Museum Admissions of $15, except children 12 and under get in free.

Friday – Sunday | Santa’s Seaside Village | Catch 31
Santa’s Seaside Village, presented by Catch 31, has set up shop at Atlantic Avenue & 30th Street at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront to delight the young and the young-at-heart! The Village will feature animated displays, shopping, live entertainment, and Santa Claus himself, all with a beachy twist!
Time: 2pm – 9pm
$4 per person. Children 2 and under are free. Carnival rides and pony rides require separate tickets.


Starting Friday – January 2nd | Busch Gardens Christmas Town | Busch Gardens
Christmas shines brightest at Busch Gardens ® Christmas Town ™ in Williamsburg, Virginia. The world’s most beautiful theme park is aglow with over eight million Christmas lights, making it the largest light display in North America. Festive food and drink, holiday shopping and heart-warming shows make the spirit of the season come alive.

10am – 1pm | 7th Annual Turkey Pardoning | Virginia Living Museum
For the seventh year, the Virginia Living Museum will celebrate the long and healthy life of its wild turkeys during the annual Turkey Pardoning Ceremony at 11 a.m.
Included with museum admission.


Newport News 

Opens Thursday | Celebration in Lights Newport News Park
Celebration in Lights, Virginia’s first drive-through holiday light event, opens for its 24th  season on Thanksgiving night (November 24, 2016).  The event will be open each evening, through January 1, 2017.
Time: 5:30 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. nightly
$12 per car and $60 per bus


Thanksgiving | Big Turkey Burn  5K & Kids 1 Mile | New Town in Williamsburg
Mettle Events continues its annual Thanksgiving Day 5K at this exciting new venue.
Time: 8 a.m. – 12 p.m.

Virginia Beach

7 p.m. | Moscow Ballet’s Great Russian Nutcracker | The Sandler Center
Enchant the whole family with larger than life magical props, a 60 foot growing Christmas tree and spectacular Russian-made costumes and sets. A must-see event, witness the world’s best dancers on stage in your city.

Join us for a day of fun shopping with a host of vendors from crafters, to bakers, to jewelry consultants, make-up consultants, clothing vendors, and more.

7 p.m. | TBMA Monthly Bluegrass Concert | Hickory Ruitan Club
The TBMA monthly concert held at the Hickory Ruritan Club features some of the best in local and regional bluegrass talent.


7 p.m. | Home Alone – Film with Live Orchestra | Chrysler Hall
A true holiday favorite, this beloved comedy classic features renowned composer John Williams’ charming and delightful score performed live to picture by the Virginia Symphony Orchestra with the Governor’s School for the Arts Orchestra.

5:00pm – 8:30pm | Port Warwick Holiday Tree Lighting | Port Warwick
The kids will love visiting Santa while choral groups, storytellers and other live entertainment will get everyone in the holiday spirit!


10am | ReStored Retail Pop-Up | Downtown Suffolk Historic District
Deck the halls this holiday season with handcrafted, homemade and eclectic gifts. On Saturday, November 26, 2016,  join more than 35 merchants and food vendors throughout Suffolk’s historic downtown district offering artisan-quality gifts. Shoppers will also find discounts and holiday specials from downtown’s established retailers and restaurateurs’ as well.

5 p.m. | Christmas in Driver | King’s Highway, Driver Village
Get free pictures with Santa when he arrives by fire truck. Sponsored by Driver Merchants Association / Driver Volunteer Fire Department.

9am – 4pm | ViBe District Small Business Saturday | ViBe Creative District
November 26th is Small Business Saturday! Support your local small businesses in the ViBe Creative District by visiting our neighborhood to get your holiday shopping started! We’ll be having special events, prizes, deals, giveaways, and a district-wide scavenger hunt!
