Your Hampton Roads Weekend May 1-3

There’s something for everyone in Hampton Roads this weekend. You can ring in May with kites, concerts, shows, and pretty much anything you want to drink. And don’t forget to pick up some free stuff, too, like comic books on Saturday ALL OVER THE PLACE!

Chesapeake

Chesapeake Restaurant Week: Friday May 1 through Friday May 8
Eat out and support Chesapeake restaurants while supporting Chesapeake students. A donation from each meal will go to the Chesapeake Public Schools Educational Foundation.

Hampton

The Bodacious Boardwalk Bazaar & Wine Festival: Friday May 1 & Saturday May 2 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Sunday May 3 10 a.m.-6 p.m.
Over 200 vendors, artists, crafters, several of Virginia’s finest wineries and beer garden under 3 impressive large tents. RV’s, Boats, Live Music, Great Food, all on the bay! Something for everyone at the scenic and historic Fort Monroe, Virginia.

Norfolk

Virginia Wine Festival: Saturday May 2 and Sunday May 3 11 a.m.-6 p.m. in Town Point Park.
Spend a spring weekend on the waterfront in Town Point Park, tasting wine from over 25 premier Virginia wineries!  Feast on gourmet foods, shop from specialty merchants and enjoy live music on the Downtown Norfolk Waterfront.  All wines presented during the festival are available for purchase by the bottle or case throughout the day.

Virginia Beach

Virginia Arts Festival- Tangle: Friday May 1 and Saturday May 2, 5:30-7:30 PM. Sunday May 3, 12-2 PM, 3:30-5 PM at the Sandler Center.
Get “Tangled”! In this unforgettable interactive experience, kids and families are each given a ball of soft elastic to weave around and through 24 tall slender golden poles, creating dense multi-colored landscape, tangled and interwoven to make a place where they can play and explore and bounce, as the music plays and costumed performers weave through the crowd.

Disney Fantasia Live in Concert: Saturday May 2 8:00 p.m. and Sunday May 3 2:30 p.m. at the Sandler Center
Experience one of the crown jewels of feature animation as you view scenes from Walt Disney’s groundbreaking 1940 film Fantasia and Disney’s homage to the original, Fantasia 2000 — as the Virginia Symphony Orchestra performs the unforgettable classical score live!

First Fridays: 5 p.m.-8:30 p.m.
In its third season, each First Fridays event features music, food and merchandise vendors and a beer and wine garden all in an authentic downtown setting.

Virginia Beach

FM99’s Lunatic Luau: Doors open at 2:00pm and the last show ends at 10:50pm. Show features Godsmack, Slayer band, Papa Roach, Halestorm, SUICIDAL TENDENCIES, The Pretty Reckless, Testament, Exodus, HELLYEAH, We Are Harlot and Starset

It’s FREE Comic Book Day at participating Hampton Roads locations. Many events have special kid’s activities!

Newport News

26th Newport News Children’s Festival of Friends: 9 a.m.-5:00 p.m. in Newport News Park.
Kids ages 2 -12 will enjoy over 100 free hands-on activities, costumed characters, and free children’s rides.

Norfolk

Norfolk Ecofest: ecoFest on the Lafayette River is a new, action oriented environmental festival held in the Colonial Place section of Norfolk. Activities include 40 booths with environmentally friendly themes and messages, food trucks, music and artists, boating and fishing and other water activities, crowning of the Canine Crusader, children’s activities, a rain barrel silent auction, the Colonial Seaport Foundation and re-enactors, city fire boat rides, and more!

Portsmouth

Up- Family Movies on the Lawn: Gates open 7:30 p.m., movie starts at dusk at nTelos Wireless Pavilion. Join us under the stars on the Pavilion Lawn Saturday evenings in May for “FAMILY MOVIES ON THE LAWN”. The nTelos Wireless Pavilion is the perfect backdrop for these FREE events.

Virginia Beach

Atlantic Coast Kite Fest- Virginia Beach: 10 a.m.-4 p.m.  Oceanfront at 17th st.
Features the Best Kite Contest.  In addition, families are invited to participate in kite building workshops led by Archie Stewart of Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts. These workshops are free and include kite materials and instructions on how to build a kite, as well as the aerodynamics of kite flying and kite safety.

Town Center Craft Beer Fest: 1:00pm–6:00 p.m. at Town Center.
Over 50 craft beers from 25 breweries will be available for sampling at the Town Center Craft Beer Festival.  Tickets include sampling and live entertainment. Tickets are $25 in advance (plus service fees) through Ticketmaster, and $30 at the gate if available.

Yorktown

Brews, Blues, and BBQ on the River: Noon-6:00 p.m. in Historic Yorktown. This event will showcase some of the best Blues musicians in the Hampton Roads area & beyond. Add that to 26 craft beers, incredible BBQ, and other gourmet foods and you have the makings for an incredible day. $25 in advance and $30 at door.

Sunday

Newport News

The Mariners’ Craft Beer Festival 2015: noon-5:00 p.m. at The Mariner’s Museum.
Live music, good food and great beer all in the unique setting of The Mariners’ Museum. $30 for Members in Advance, $35 for General Admission in Advance, $45 Day of the Event for everyone, $15 for Non-Drinkers

Portsmouth

Atlantic Coast Kite Festival- Portsmouth: 10:00am-4:00pm at City Park.
Features the Best Kite Contest.  In addition, families are invited to participate in kite building workshops which includes kite materials and cover the aerodynamics of kite flying and kite safety.  American Kite Association members from throughout the Southeast will present kite demonstrations, perform kite routines to music, and fly giant kites (up to 80 feet long) that include an octopus kite!  Kite vendors will be on site to sell various kinds of kites. Admission to the kite festival is free.
