The Zeiders American Dream Theater, known as “The Z,” opened on Oct. 5 with a special ribbon-cutting ceremony ahead of their SXSW style arts festival, the Proteus Festival.
The new theater is located in the Virginia Beach Town Center and features a state of the art 300 seat Main Stage Theater and a 120 seat Studio Theater. It joins two other theaters in the area, The Westin and the Sandler Center for the Arts.
According to a press release from The Z, they plan to “provide a wide range of highly entertaining artistic experiences to the community by fostering and introducing new works and exceptionally gifted artists in all areas of the performing arts.”
They kicked off their grand opening weekend an arts festival, the Proteus Festival. The three-day festival was headlined by musical acts, The Hunts and Kishi Bashi. The Hunts are Chesapeake locals that have over 10 million Spotify listens. They have preciously toured with the X Ambassadors and The Fray.
Beyond the headliners, the festival featured music from rock, electronic, folk, blues and Celtic artists. It also featured film screenings and theater performances. Taking top spots among these were musician BJ Griffin, CORE Theatre Ensemble, and actor Jason Kypros.
The Z is under the leadership of Artistic Director Bart Kuebler and Executive Director Terry Flint.
