Guide to Summer Reading Programs

Reading is fundamental – and rewarding! It’s important that children continue to read over the summer break, and there are several summer reading programs that are free and fun in Hampton Roads. hrScene put together this city-by-city list.

Chesapeake Public Library

It’s the most wonderful time of the year – Summer Reading Challenge time! There are prizes, events, and more to make this a summer of fun! You can visit the Chesapeake Public Library website to learn how to register, now through August 11, 2018.

Preschool (0-5) and Youth (grades K-5)
Log 140 minutes or more each week to spin the prize wheel!

Teens (grades 6-12)
Log 140 minutes or more a week to receive a book (while supplies last) and a raffle ticket for the teen prize drawing. Prizes include a Kindle Fire, a 3D Doodler, a record player, and more!Adults (18+)
Read and log at least one book per week and receive a raffle ticket. Be entered for prizes including an Echo Dot, a drone, a date night package, and more.


Hampton Summer Reading Club beings mid June and this years theme is Reading Takes You Everywhere. You can check out the Hampton Public Library website for more information on reading club events. June 15 through July 27.

Kids and Teens
Reading through activities, games, music, and fun check with your local branch for times and events.

Check out and read, or listen to an audio book of your choice. Fill out a review slip and return it to the library to be entered into weekly drawings.

Newport News

It’s time to suit up for summer reading! the Newport News Public Library says summer is the time to read for fun and learn something new. With events for kids, teens, adults, and families. You can check out the events and activities brochure here! The program runs June 18 through July 31, 2018.


This year’s summer reading program is a ticket to fun! Head over to your local library location from June 23- August 4, 2018 to enter.

Babies, Toddlers, and Preschoolers (ages 0-4)
Kids earn prizes by picking a completing a summer game board that includes both play and reading activities!

Kids and Teens
Pick up a summer reading passport and complete the activities within to win! First completed passport wins a prize, and each additional one completed is an entry into the grand prize drawing.

Every time you check out a book you can fill out a boarding pass to be entered into weekly prize drawings!


The Louise and Marvin Fenster 2018 Summer Reading Program! This year’s theme is “READING TAKES YOU EVERYWHERE!” All four library branches are registration sites, and registration will be available beginning June 18. Adult participants will be entered to win a Kindle Fire, and teens will be entered to win a pair of collapsible headphones. Also this year, the Portsmouth Public Library is holding a bookmark content just for teens. Children ages 12 through 17 can print the bookmark template then submit their design. Click here to get started. Entries are due by July 31.


The 2018 Summer Reading Challenge will run from June 16 to August 4. Help the Suffolk Public Library reach its goal of 8,000 books this summer! You can register both individuals and families here. Participants will earn a button and one entry to the $500 value prize raffle for each book read!

Virginia Beach

Virginia Beach Public Libraries are challenging all readers to engage in reading throughout the summer months. Read whatever you want and receive incentives all summer! You can register for any of the programs here! The program begins on June 11 and ends on August 5, 2018.
