The Monday Beat – March 30, 2015

It’s the last Monday in March, your bracket is busted and while you’re waiting for those April flowers – I have a couple of musical happenings to keep you occupied.

This weekend is the annual Sea Level Singer/Songwriter Festival presented by Tidewater Arts Outreach.  The festival starts Thursday night and is a great chance to see some of the best musicians from the 757.  The marquee event of the festival is Saturday night’s Emerging Artist Contest Showcase.  The showcase features 10 of the best singer/songwriters in Hampton Roads and they’ll perform in front a panel of judges at Norfolk Collegiate’s Meredith Center for the Performing Arts.  The winner will receive a Paul Reed Smith custom acoustic guitar, studio time to record, a photography and video package and invitations to appear on Out Of The Box, Hunter on Sunrise and The Hampton Roads Show.  Previous winners include Paul Norfleet,  Nate Sacks, Issac Gay and last year’s winner, Logan Layman.  This year’s finalist are James Arellano, Jon Bell, Holly Bishop, Alice Conner, Tom Euler, Andy Geels, Starr Celeste Horruitiner, Mike Lawson, Roy Moats, and Dan Pellegrino.  Tickets for the showcase are available at this link and at the door.  sealevelschedule

A great night of storytelling is happening Friday night at the Oceanfront.  ‘Almost All Dunn’ – a Hampton Roads super group featuring Doug Dunn of Steel River, Mark Dunn of Furious George, Former 97.3 The Eagle DJ Jimmy Ray Dunn and guitarist Mike Doyle of Revery and Sea Of Souls fame will take over Abbey Road Pub for a night of ‘guitar slingers and song singers’.  They will be performing their favorite songs as well as performing their own tunes and telling the stories behind them.  Mike’s bandmate in Revery and Sea of Souls John Adkins will also join them, so I’m pretty sure you’ll hear a couple of great Revery songs.  Mike Proffitt will open the show up at 9:30p and the best part: NO COVER!

The lineup for the inaugural ICE 757 Festival,  August 28 – September 4 in Virginia Beach, will be announced this week.  ICE (Innovation, Culture, Extreme) will feature films, extreme sports and national and local music. The first band was announced today and that band is Breathe Carolina.  More details and announcements for ICE will be coming in the next few weeks and I’ll give you a full preview of this event later this summer.
