This weekend’s sports weather dilemma

After a quiet summer, Mother Nature is here and she is going to rain on your sports parade this weekend. So what are you going to do about it?

I get to once again hit the road for an out-of-town baseball tournament. Will I be traveling all the way to Maryland this weekend only to have my games rained out? Time and money washed down the drain because of rain? Oh the joy of travel baseball!

This is what we are looking at this weekend. Friday night football games will be soggy. Soccer tournaments will be wet and windy. Baseball games will be called off. That’s what happens when these wet weekends come around.

Will you find other ways to keep your athlete fine tuned? Thankfully these days we have several indoor facilities where you can train.

As of Thursday, no high school football games in Hampton Roads have been postponed or cancelled. Keep your fingers crossed that the rain holds off until after the games, but bring your best rain gear just in case.

There is a better chance of rain for Saturday. The Battle of the Bay may be a wet one this season. When Norfolk State hosts cross town rival Hampton at Dick Price Stadium, Super Doppler 10 is predicting a 60 percent chance of rain. So Spartans and Pirates get out your foul weather gear!

Hampton and Norfolk State will not be alone in the elements Saturday. Four miles away, the Old Dominion football team will host Appalachian State at Foreman Field. The game gets underway at 3:30 and that means some wet tailgating.

Football is a game where rain is only a minor nuisance for the players, but it can be a real bummer for the fans. Make the most of your game day experience and plan ahead. Make sure have a sturdy umbrella, good rain pants and jacket to go along with your warm rain boots.

I hope you have a dry and wonderful weekend despite the uncertain weather ahead. Please think of me while I am driving into the I-95 unknown of potential rainouts this weekend. The things we do for our kids!
