This past winter, we watched as the world’s best athletes converged on PyeongChang to compete for gold. In Hampton this weekend, there will be a competition that involves practice, skill and balance.
Watch the world’s best waiters compete for the ultimate prize, bragging rights and a limited edition wrestler’s belt.
Downtown Hampton and Sysco invite the community out to the 3rd Annual Waiter’s Race.
“The idea came from local restaurant owner, Carlyle Bland. He reached out to the company Sysco and they agreed to sponsor the event for five years. Each year they give us $10,000 to put on this event,” said Joanne Ross, administrative assistant for Downtown Hampton.
All participants must work in the hospitality industry and are asked to wear their restaurant shirt while competing. The food service professionals have to race through a series of obstacles while balancing a tray of Stella Artois. The goal is to have the fastest time and, of course, not spill a drop.
There are three divisions; individual, team and owner:
- Individual Division – 1st Place $1000 2nd Place $500 and 3rd Place $250.
- Four-Person Team Division – 1st Pace $1200, 2nd Place $600 and 3rd Place $400 and traveling trophy for your restaurant.
- Owner’s Division – Bragging Traveling trophy!
The registration to participate is $10 in advanced and $15 at the door. 100 percent of the funds from registration is donated to non-profit “No Kid Hungry”. If you’re just looking to watch the competition, admission is free and open to the public.
It all goes down this Saturday, July 28 at 2 p.m. at Queens Way in Hampton. Once the winners are announced, stick around for the Downtown Hampton Block Party. Country music group Buckshot WB will be hitting the stage.
