If you are trying to stretch your money one of the best ways is to find a grocery store that doubles coupons. It can often mean a shopper leaves the store paying only pennies on the dollar. It also can be very confusing- especially for new coupon users.
In Hampton Roads we have two great chains that double coupons- Farm Fresh and Harris Teeter.
Both stores double coupons up to $.99 every day, all the time. So when you check out a $.75 coupon is worth $1.50 off the item you purchased. A $.50 coupon is worth $1.
Both stores will double up to 20 coupons per day. You can use more than 20 but they will only double up to 20. So if you have $1.50 coupons feel free to throw them on the pile- they won’t affect coupon doubling.
Wednesday is a special day at Farm Fresh- they will double coupons up to $1. So a $1 coupon is worth $2 off whatever you purchase. They do this from open to close on Wednesday.
Here are some tips for doubling coupons in Hampton Roads:
Coupon doubling happens automatically at the register- you won’t need to ask the cashier about it. At Harris Teeter you must have their store loyalty card for coupons to double. Farm Fresh does not currently have a card.
Sometimes a lower value coupon is better– in a store that doubles. Since our stores normally only double up to $.99 if you use a $1 coupon it will only be worth $1. In this situation a $.75 coupon would be worth $1.50- more than $1!
Some coupons state “do not double” on them– if they do the store most likely will not double them.
Each store will only double a certain number of each of the same coupon– Farm Fresh will only double three “like” coupons. So, if you were to buy four boxes of Cheerios and use four $.50 off 1 Cheerios coupons, only the first three would double. They will still accept the fourth coupon, but it will not double. Farm Fresh will only double two. These same numbers apply to internet printable coupons and manufacturer’s coupons (like from the newspaper).
Watch for special coupon events– Both stores will have special coupon events where they will increase the limit for doubled coupons. During “Super Double” or “Mega Double” events they will often double up to $2. That means a $2 coupon is worth $4 off whatever you purchase. This can mean taking home some higher value items for FREE! They do these events whenever they feel like it, though Harris Teeter generally does them about every 6 weeks or so.
If you want to watch for these sales we have three bloggers in Hampton Roads who specialize in Harris Teeter and Farm Fresh: A Frugal Chick, The Coupon Challenge and Mom on Dealz. Especially with Farm Fresh being in such a small area it can be hard to find resources to help!
