The Old Dominion University baseball team is on a roll. They have won five straight games and Wednesday night they beat top ranked UVa 14 to 5 in Charlottesville.
Monday afternoon, Junior infielder PJ Higgins hit a 2-run home run in the bottom of the 8th to lead the Monarchs to a 9-8 win over The University of Pennsylvania. Higgins also knocked in five runs in that game. “It means a lot to me to put the team up by two, but I was kind of upset in the bat before because the pitcher thew an inside fast ball and I got jammed and he kept on throwing me inside. So it was nice to get the hit when it mattered,” said Higgins.
The Wallingford, Connecticut native was named to the Preseason All-Conference USA baseball team.
Higgins normally plays second base but he also catches. ODU head coach Chris Finwood says Higgins’ value to the team is his versatility. “PJ’s just such a versatile guy. He played second base for us yesterday and today he is going to play catcher. He also hit the game winning home run and drove in five runs for us, and we needed every one of them so he had a big day. He is a guy that is very skilled and a tough-minded guy. The biggest thing for PJ is that he swing at good pitches,” added Finwood.
The Monarchs begin play in Conference USA today at Western Kentucky University. Finwood was the head coach for the Hilltoppers baseball program for six years before joining ODU.
