Running Treats and Tricks this Weekend “On The Run!”

The Latest Running News and Notes in Hampton Roads with Running Reporter,  Jon “Flex” Leiding

No mask required!  Hope you are doing well.  Plenty of races means a big “Congrats” to a few people and a big “Shout Out” to you if you’re running this weekend.

Let’s chat about last weekend or as Forrest Gump might have said: “That time when I kept runnin’ and runnin’ and runnin….

First, the Here to Enternity 5k title went to Steve Armitage, of Norfolk, with a swift time of 19:44.  The ladies were led by Portsmouth’s Jennifer Gildea, who rocked the 3.1 Miles in 23:01.

At the Boo- Yah 5K,  times were “scary fast”, with Carolyn Harrison as the women’s champion in 23:13.  Not to be outdone, Sean Sartae was listed as the overall winner, crossing in 19:07.

Not satisfied yet?  What about the Walk for the Animals 5k?  Wendy Ireland was the first female in 20:57, while Virginia Beach’s Marc Deserio took the men’s title with a 19:44.  These are all good times!

MCM- Congrats to All Finishers!

Those of you who took a trip to the District last weekend and ran that little 26.2 mile race they had up there last Sunday get my “respect” medal!   The Marine Corps Marathon is the sixth largest Marathon in the U.S. and if you were one of the lucky ones to climb that last quarter mile and cross the finish, you know it is a huge accomplishment!  Well done and “Oooh-Rah!”

Okay, so this “reading thing” might be slowing you down for the Halloween weekend.  My prescription to you is either eat a whole bucketful of candy bars or watch the recap video below!

Now for this Weekend!

The Wicked 10K and Kids Monster Mile are  at the Virginia Beach Convention Center Saturday Morning and finish at 20th Street on the Oceanfront.  I’m certain there may be a few “Witches Brews” handed out along with prizes for Costumes.  Judging for costumes goes from 6:30-730 a.m. with the race at 8 a.m.

Crazy?  Scary?  Haunting?  These are words used for the Maniac 13 Hour ULTRA Run at the Warhill Complex on the Peninsula.  It starts at 8 p.m. on Saturday night and goes until 8 a.m.  That’s 13 hours of running.  I wonder if they will all stop at 2 a.m. and turn their watches back to 1 a.m.?  Or will they be in a zombie-like state at that point and not care what time it is?  These are the things that wake me in my sleep around in the middle of the night!

The Shine 5k is at Mount Trashmore Saturday morning and the Governor’s Land 5K races away in Williamsburg that same morning.  It’s a perfect formula:  run a race plus candy eaten that day minus the sweat and calories burned equals satisfaction!   Now you know why my math skill are strong.

Sunday, while some of you may still be wiping of the makeup from the previous night’s party, the Dolphin Circle 5k race runs through First Landing at 9 a.m.  Many of you like to get a long run there, so be aware that a race will be going on.  If you don’t want to run but love to cheer, grab your coffee and check the New York City Marathon on TV.  Some of our 757 friends will take on the course.  Here’s to fast times!
