Lake Taylor and Oscar Smith Play for High School Football Championships

As we get one day closer to Christmas, we also get one day closer to crowing champions in public high school football.

Lake Taylor and Oscar Smith remain alive for a championship and both will play Saturday for their shot at the title.

Lake Taylor won the Group 4A championship the last two seasons and head into Saturday’s contest against Salem with a 29 game win streak. This game will be a rematch of last season’s championship game, won 41-16 by Lake Taylor. The Titans will play for the title at Liberty University in Lynchburg at 4:30.

The Titans are led by senior Wayne Davis who last week was named the Virginia Gatorade Player of the Year. The receiver and defensive back will play for Ohio State University next season.

Like Lake Taylor, Oscar Smith is undefeated and will play Westfield at the University of Virginia at 4:07. Coach Richard Morgan has led his Tigers to four state championship games over the past eight seasons and his team won the title in 2008 and 2011.

So two teams, two high school football championships up for grabs. The first official practice to start the season was way back in August. Now we are just days away from the New Year and it’s time to crown a champion and give these young men a breather. Lets just hope they finish their seasons undefeated with state championships to keep them warm in the winter months ahead.
